Do I Need Wire Ferrules for Stranded Wire in Control Panels?
If you build or maintain control panels, you have probably faced the question more than once: should stranded wire go straight into a terminal, or should it be fitted with a ferrule first? The short answer is that ferrules are strongly recommended for stranded conductors, and in many regions they are effectively required by wiring practice and inspection standards. What a Wire ferrule actually does
A wire ferrule, also called a bootlace ferrule or Cord end terminal, is a tinned copper tube, usually with a colored insulated collar, that crimps over the stripped end of a stranded conductor. It turns a loose bundle of fine strands into a single solid pin. That pin then enters a screw terminal, spring clamp, or push-in connector cleanly.
The benefit is mechanical and electrical at the same time. Loose strands tend to splay out when a screw is tightened on them. A few strands can escape the clamp entirely, reducing the effective conductor area and creating a hot spot. Over time, a screw bearing directly on soft copper strands also relaxes, and the connection loosens. A ferrule prevents both problems: the screw clamps a rigid pin, the full conductor stays inside the terminal, and the clamping force stays stable.
Where ferrules are required or strongly advised
In industrial control panels built to common international practice, ferrules on stranded wire are treated as standard workmanship. Inspectors and panel-building guidelines discourage clamping bare stranded conductors directly under a screw, because of the strand-splaying and loosening issues described above. Spring-clamp and push-in terminals in particular are designed to accept either solid wire or a ferrule-tipped conductor; bare fine strands often will not insert reliably.

How to size a ferrule correctly
Ferrules are sized by conductor cross-section and pin length. The cross-section, marked in mm2, must match the wire: a 1.5 mm2 conductor needs a 1.5 mm2 ferrule, not a 2.5 mm2 one. An oversized ferrule cannot be crimped tightly onto the strands, which defeats the purpose. The pin length should match the depth of the terminal so that the insulated collar sits just outside the terminal body and no bare conductor is exposed.
Color coding makes this faster on the bench. Avoid generic pliers that simply squash the ferrule flat; a flattened crimp grips unevenly and can crack the insulation collar.
The workflow is simple. Strip the conductor so the bare length matches the ferrule barrel, with no copper protruding past the collar and none left short inside it. Insert the conductor fully, then crimp once with the matching die size. After crimping, the pin should be firm, the strands should not move, and the collar should be intact. Common mistakes to avoid

Using the wrong die size for the ferrule produces a loose or over-compressed pin.
